Crime rates overall have been dropping nationwide, but in these cities violent crime, murder, rape, and robberies still run rampant. Statistics were taken from the FBI uniform crime report and only cities with populations over 200,000 were included in this list.
The Motor City tops the list of most dangerous cities. Detroit has been plagued by high unemployment, population decline, and a bankrupt government, together creating the perfect storm for skyrocketing crime rates. Detroit also tops the nation in murders per capita, averaging 55 murders per 100,000 residents per year. With statistics like that, it’s no wonder so many are fleeing the Rust Belt.
With nearly 2,000 violent crimes committed per 100,000 people per year, Oakland, California positions itself as the second most dangerous city in America.
3. St. Louis
Often called “The Gateway To The West”, St. Louis has been the gateway to crime over the last decade, consistently ranking as one of the most dangerous cities in the US.
Hide your kids, hide your wife, because 420 forcible rapes are committed per year in Memphis, Tennessee.
Stockton, California filed bankruptcy in 2012 and was forced to cut its budget, leaving only 1 officer per 900 citizens. With a diminished police force and an unemployment rate above 15%, Stockton ranks number 5 on the list.
The biggest reason crime is a problem in Birmingham, Alabama is that the median household income is below $32,000 a year, making it one of the poorest cities in the nation.
Baltimore has been called “the heroine capital of the United States”. When you combine the city’s drug abuse with its gang problems, it should be no surprise that there are over 200 murders committed per year in Baltimore.
Like Birmingham, Cleveland suffers from an incredibly low median income, at just $27,000 per year. With 1 in 3 citizens living below the government poverty level, many have turned to crime.
Atlanta has taken steps to reduce some of its violent crimes over the last few years. And although it has been somewhat successful, it still remains one of the top 10 most dangerous cities to live in.
Milwaukee has seen a dramatic increase in violent crimes over the past three years, vaulting it into the number 10 spot.
