25 year old Matthew Gough had performed over 700 sky dives and 180 base jumps before trekking to Lake Garda, Italy with his friends for a base jump excursion. Unbeknownst to Matthew, this jump would bring him inches from death.
After jumping off the cliff and pulling his ripcord, the parachute became twisted, which caused it to open backwards. Matthew said “Due to the twists I couldn’t control it, I did the best I could with the situation and tried to avoid the cliff but I didn’t have the time or the space to avoid the impact.”
Michael hit the cliff face and fell 1000 feet, all caught on video from his helmet cam.
As if falling 1000 feet with a non-working parachute weren’t bad enough, Matthew nearly impaled himself on a spiked wet suit rack at the bottom of the hill.
“The spikes were around a foot long and there was ten of them, the one right in the middle brushed my face and went between my helmet and my face and ripped my helmet off, I think it cushioned my fall slightly.”
“When I hit the floor I was so shocked I was alive, I was thinking, I have seen this stuff on videos but now it is happening to me, I was in total shock that I was alive.”
Matthew was taken to the hospital and treated for injuries to his knee, tail bone, and ankle; he is expected to make a full recovery.
